QUALIFICATIONS:

Education Required:     High School Diploma or GED

Experience Required:   Prefer cooking experience in an institutional setting, i.e. school, daycare, hospital or nursing home. Will consider and evaluate cooking experience in restaurants or other food service facilities. Have knowledge of the dietary and nutritional needs of children.

SUPERVISION: Under the direct supervision of the Nutritionist and Nutrition Aide

SKILLS NEEDED:

  • Responsive to the needs of young children.
  • Able to communicate with children and adults from all ethnic, racial, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Being bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus.
  • Good writing skills and the ability to write reports as necessary.
  • Punctual and demonstrate good attendance.
  • Courteous, cooperative, respectful of confidentiality, and professional with children, parents and staff.
  • Dress appropriately for the job, i.e. wear clean clothes, practice good hygiene, and wear footwear that minimizes the possibility of slips and falls.
  • Represent the program in a positive and professional manner at all times.

 DUTIES:

  1. Provide high quality, nutritious meals to children and staff. Responsible for all cooking duties and paperwork.
  2. Prepare and cook all meals and snack, following designated menu for that day.
  3. Prepare correct amount of food for the number of children and adults to be served.
  4. Follow a schedule so that meals and snacks are served on time.
  5. Place weekly order for milk and food delivery.
  6. Maintain weekly food inventory.
  7. Receive food orders and promptly report any errors and shortages to the Nutritionist or Nutrition Aide.
  8. Maintain accurate documentation and information as needed as per USDA            Food Program Guidelines.
  9. Manage time will, such as report to work and submit reports on time.
  10. Conduct daily check on equipment and report any damages or missing items promptly to the Nutritionist or Nutrition Aide.
  11. Operate equipment and tools in a safe manner.
  12. Practice careful sanitation procedures.
  13. Work together with co-workers to accomplish daily tasks.
  14. Participate in professional development activities.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Works indoors in kitchen. High physical demand. Must be able to lift and carry at least 40 pounds. Must be able to reach above shoulders/stand on stepladder to place and retrieve items from high shelves.

Must be able to stoop, squat and bend. Must be able to work in a hot environment. All food staff is to successfully complete the Food Manager’s Course at the Galveston County Health District within 60 days of hire.

OTHER:

Comply with licensing standards. Have a clean criminal background check. Have a biannual tuberculosis test. Actively participate in all required training sessions.

Current First Aid/CPR card. Report signs of possible child abuse and neglect. Have a valid driver’s license.

Pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing needed.

Must pass physical exam and physical performance test.

Must have a valid and commercial driver’s license, and a good driving record.
